A Smith's family escaped unhurt after a blaze in a bedroom caused $200,000 of damage on Saturday evening.

Fire Service spokesman Lieutenant Dana Lovell said investigators had yet to determine the cause of the fire on Halfway Lane but it was unlikely to be suspicious.

He said: "It was a very, very aggressive fire."

A high tension, high voltage power wire from the house to a pole added to problems by causing spectacular sparking.

He said the mother was home with her two children and tried to tackle the blaze in a bedroom but was unsuccessful and called the Fire Service and evacuated the house.

Five pumps and 13 men tackled the fire with three men wearing breathing apparatus going into heart of the inferno. "The room and contents were totally destroyed and there was smoke damage throughout the house," Lt. Lovell explained.
