expressed concerns regarding the celebrations and in particular the traditional motorcade carried out by the winning team.

Dennis Lister, Sport Shadow Minister, said that he is currently putting together a proposal, which will be presented to the necessary authorities in the establishment of a formal celebration.

"The overall objective of this proposal is for Bermuda to recognise the achievements of her youth in the soccer arena,'' said Lister. "Through the implementation of this proposal we would see the winning teams escorted throughout the City of Hamilton in a motorcade where they will be received at City Hall by the Mayor.'' He went on to say that the governing bodies -- Bermuda Football Association, clubs, Mayor of Hamilton -- should take more of an active role in organising a formal celebration or motorcade to prevent any serious incidents occurring. He also noted that rather than have to be called later, the Police should be involved beforehand.

Recently two Southampton Rangers supporters were arrested following a disturbance at the Devonshire Recreation Club. The Rangers motorcade had stopped at the club, but when they were refused drinks became abusive and started throwing bottles. Police were called and when they confronted the motorcade an altercation took place resulting in the arrests.

Said Lister: "In light of the recent incidents that have occurred during the celebrations by fans and players of Cup winners, concerns are being raised by the public and authorities as a result of these, which highlights the need for a formal method of celebration.'' Stressing that the party does not want to appear to be a `party pooper' and would in fact like to see some sort of honour bestowed on the winning team -- possibly the `Key' to the City.

"We are in no way trying to dampen the celebration spirit of the Cup winners, but only trying to eliminate the negative aspects of such celebrations,'' added Lister.

Lister said that the PLP hoped that the proposal would be put into effect in time for the next soccer season and urged tomorrow's winners as well as the authorities to let common sense prevail.
