A man who stabbed a bouncer at the Ozone night club received a probation sentence on Thursday in Supreme Court.

Father of two Kaream Tsun Gibbons, 27, of Rambling Lane, Pembroke, was also ordered to pay $600 compensation to the bouncer.

Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrossen told the court that on March 14, 2003, Gibbons and a friend attempted to enter the Ozone night club. The bouncer allowed Gibbons entry, but his friend was denied.

The pair then entered Flannagans and later tried to re-enter the Ozone club, but the same happened again.

But this time his friend tried to push past the bouncer and was restrained. A fight ensued and Gibbons claimed that the reason he slashed the bouncer was because he had hit him on the head with his flashlight.

Mrs. Vaucrossen said Gibbons then ran east along Front Street and as he was running away Police saw him throw away his penknife.

She added that the bouncer realised his jacket and shirt was cut and had been stabbed during the fray after the incident was over.

Mrs. Vaucrossen called for an immediate custodial sentence saying that violence amongst the youth was prevalent in Bermudian society.

Lawyer Victoria Pearman asked the court to consider probation or a combination of imprisonment and probation as a sentence.

Ms Pearman said that during Gibbons? time on remand, he had reflected on his actions and had decided that he wanted to be a teacher and had began studying computers and the GED.

Puisne Justice Charles-Etta Simmons gave him two years probation and a one-and-a-half-year suspended sentence.

He has to report to his probation officer, submit to urine testing, complete any courses that his probation officer sees fit and he has to adhere to a curfew for the six months of his probation.

Justice Simmons urged him to get his life together and not to allow his children to see him go in and out of prison, as that it what they will think is normal.
