School of Excellence winners
Ten participants of the advanced group from the David Bascome and Shaun Goater Pro Soccer Clinic have been chosen to take part in this year's School Of Excellence Programme which is sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda.
Now in its fifth year of existence, the follow up programme to the Pro Clinic will see this year's selected participants take part in a community investigative project in an effort to raise community awareness.
Orande Bascome, Cheyra Bell, K'Wande Lathan, Reggie Lowe, Mathew Madeiros, Akeem Taylor, Dun-ya Taylor, Shuntae Todd, Akil Trott and Thomas Watson were all selected to take part in the venture.
The project seeks to strengthen each student's knowledge and awareness of the roles different people in the community play and how they can learn from their community and help out.
Berkeley Institute teacher Reeshmah Swan will be conducting interviews with selected adult members of the community.
These will include police officers, prison officials, professional business people, community leaders, incarcerated individuals and recovering drug addicts.
The programme will encompass two weeks and at the end students must then present their interview findings and summarise what they have learned from the experience.
Bascome, president of Bascome's Pro Soccer and manager of the School of Excellence programme said: "Focusing on personalised interaction with a diverse group of elder members of our community will not only help the students grow personally, but also help direct them to find a constructive role within our community.
"While we want our students to learn more about soccer, it is important that they grow to be well rounded individuals who understand that the choices that they have in life will make a difference no matter what they do."
