The Fairmont Southampton Princess faces the prospect of carrying out major building work on a planned new spa well into the summer season or postponing it until next year, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

The Island's largest hotel was given planning permission this week for a multi-million dollar spa and health complex -- but it has still not decided exactly what it will build.

The hotel's owners, Canadian Pacific, will not make a final decision about the project until a meeting at its headquarters in Toronto in April.

The hotel refused yesterday to disclose any details about the project because no decision has been made.

The Development Applications Board this week granted planning approval in principle to renovate the mezzanine floor and built a spa and health facility.

Fairmont Bermuda property manager Mark Benoilt told The Royal Gazette yesterday: "We are in a position where we haven't confirmed the final scope, so we would prefer to wait until we have final confirmation of what we are going to build.

"We have permission for a full build up of a spa, but we are not at the point to state how much will be built. We are going through gyrations as to how and what exactly we are going to build.

"I am categorically not saying that it isn't going to go ahead as is.''
