Beneficial decisions
Canadian forces when the land will no longer be devoted to the military. With so little available space in Bermuda, it is important that we make generally beneficial decisions about both Daniels Head and King's Point.
Clearly Daniels Head is too desirable a location to be spoiled by an amusement park and we do not think anyone will give that idea serious consideration.
However, the concrete end of King's Point might be another matter when Bermuda talks about amusement parks or future facilities designed to attract visitors.
Like Sandys South Opposition MP Mr. Walter Roberts, we have difficulty with the Wet 'n' Wild idea because we think it is too "at home'' American to attract visitors to Bermuda.
It has been suggested that the area would make an ideal cottage colony and it is an excellent site for such a purpose. However, Sandys Parish already has two top-quality cottage colonies in Cambridge Beaches and Lantana and we think a third might be overkill. In any case, the land should be devoted to use by the people of Bermuda and occupation as a cottage colony might involve it being closed to general public usage.
Some people have suggested that the buildings constructed by the Canadian Government could be used as a drug rehabilitation centre. It is possible that the new drugs quango will recommend a general treatment centre and if we are to have a centre it would be a welcome change not to have to build one.
However, we think that a properly organised general drugs facility with a medical unit would cost Bermuda more to operate in terms of running expenses than the cost which would be incurred in paying to send each Bermudian who needs treatment to a facility abroad.
Daniels Head seems to us to be a rather isolated location for a recreation centre for senior citizens although some of the buildings now there might be suitable for such purposes. It would, however, be a large area for just seniors from the West End and might be too long a journey for seniors from the central parishes.
Since it has been used for military purposes, Bermudians have been excluded from the Daniels Head area for many years. We think the area should be returned to the people for general usage. There should be no rush to continue its use as a site for occupation. Bermuda has to remember that the future will require the amenities for relaxation offered by open areas. Government has recognised that fact by devoting large sums of money for the purchase of open space.
The Canadian exit from Daniels Head, although economically painful for Bermuda, is an ideal opportunity to get back for the people, without cost, an area of some 13 acres of prime waterfront real estate for general enjoyment by Bermudians and visitors. We do not think Bermuda need concern itself with ideas to occupy military buildings just because they are there. Nor should Canada consider that it is doing Bermuda any favour if it gives us back our land occupied by military buildings we might well not want, will have to maintain or will have to spend large sums of money on to convert to useful civilian purposes.
We think Government should ask the Canadian Government to give thanks to the people of Bermuda for Canada's 30 year military use of Daniels Head as a secret facility by returning Daniels Head, as closely as possible, to the natural state of the area. If there happen to be buildings which suit the usage of the area as public space, such as lavatories, then they should be left, but if the buildings do not suit, they should be removed. We think that is the least Canada can do.
