Success at the Reefs for juniors
More than 50 junior tennis players took to the courts over the long weekend competing in The Reefs Junior Open Tournament held at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium and Elbow Beach courts, the fifth of six Ranking Tournaments this year.
Rylee MacDonald, top seed in the 14s, won both the Girls 14 & Under and 18 & Under singles titles, defeating Catherine Cooke 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the 14s and Melissa Spurling 6-4, 4-6, 7-3 in the final of the 18s.
Catherine Cooke, age 12 and top seed, won the Girls 12 & Under title by defeating Courtney Fisher 6-1, 6-1 in the final, which should put her at the top of the rankings. Top seed Ciara Svensen, age ten, who had been playing up an age group in the 12s, won the Girls 10 & Under title by defeating Tyler Smith 8-4 in the final.
David Thomas, top seed and clear favourite, won the Boys 18 & Under title, defeating Charles Skater 6-4, 6-0 in the final. Earlier that day, he had defeated Johnny Holland 7-5, 7-5 in the semi-final.
Kevin Caza, top seed in the 1 4 & Under division, narrowly defeated Thomas Svensen 7-6, 5-7, 7-4 in the final to take that title and keep his top ranking spot. Earlier Svensen had defeated second seed Frederick Wade 6-3, 6-3 to earn his place in the final.
In the Boys 12 & Under draw, second seed Ryan Benevides took the title by defeating Neal Towlson 6-2, 6-3. Earlier in the tournament, Towlson had upset the top seed Kieran Joynes 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 in a close match.
Ben Green and Rasheed Walkes, both ten and playing in their very first tournament, battled it out for the Boys 10 & U singles title, with Ben defeating Rasheed 8-2 to take the victory in a closer match than the score showed. Earlier, Rasheed had upset the top seed Christopher Cooper 8-7.
The Mixed Doubles proved to be popular with nine pairs in the 12 & Under division and six pairs in the 18&U division, with the Reefs being the only junior tournament offering mixed doubles this year.
In the 12 & Under Mixed Doubles, top seeds Cooke and Towlson took the title by defeating James and Zara Jekyll 7-5, 6-3 in the final.
In the 18 & Under Mixed Doubles, 16-year-old David Thomas teamed up with eight year old Christina Joynes, playing in her first tournament, and proved to be still too strong for top seeds Kevin Caza and Melissa Spurling, defeating them 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
