escaped a prison sentence in Magistrates' Court last week.

Janeiro Sosa of New York, was fined $1,000 and given a three-month prison sentence suspended for two years after he pleaded guilty to the April 23 offence.

Sosa, a Dominican Republic national residing in the Bronx presented himself to US customs at the Civil Air Terminal at 12.45 p.m.

Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, said a search by agents discovered a brown paper bag containing 18 silver foil wraps in Sosa's jacket pocket.

In his wallet, a US dollar note containing white powder was found.

Sosa told the officers he brought the drugs to Bermuda for his own use.

"I'm a drug addict,'' he said.

Insp. Duffy said the drug was 19 to 25 percent pure.

Sosa's lawyer, Mr. Tim Marshall asked Magistrate the Wor. John Judge to take into account his client's guilty plea.

Sosa, he said, was here as a tourist.

"The purity was very low,'' he said. "He has learned a very painful lesson.'' Mr. Judge told Sosa the only thing keeping him from being sent to prison was the fact that the cocaine was not very pure.

Furbert was arrested and taken to the Police Station where an alco-analyser test found 200 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood in his system.

Insp. Duffy said Furbert had been involved in a similar matter fairly recently. He was fined $350 and disqualified from all vehicles for 12 months in May of 1989 for the same offence.
