A great blue heron will be missed by Harbour Road residents who affectionately referred to him as ?Bob? ? the neighbourhood pet.

?Bob? was a familiar sight at the Turtle Bay dock on Harbour Road in Warwick. He was rushed to the Aquarium last weekend when a resident discovered him hovering under the dock with an injured wing.

Zoey Roberts, Head Zookeeper at the Bermuda Aquarium Museum & Zoo, said Bob had to be put down on Monday when it proved impossible to operate on his broken wing.

Bob was in such weak condition that zookeepers made the decision to put him down.

Ms Roberts said it appeared the bird had flown into an electrical wire or been knocked about by a gust of wind. During kite-flying season, bird-related injuries increase as heavy winds and kite strings can pose a danger to birds which have fragile, hollow bones such as the heron, she said.

?Wild birds who are in poor condition with injuries such as these make poor surgical candidates and we make the more humane decision to put them down,? she said.

BAMZ Curator Dr. Ian Walker said the Aquarium has dealt with a number of these injuries in the past as the birds find landing and taking off during the windy season much more difficult.
