Unfastened helmet leads to arrest of teen on drug charges

What initially appeared to be a straightforward case of a man riding without a helmet ended up with Police struggling with a suspect at Hamilton Ferry Terminal on Sunday afternoon.

According to a Police spokesman, officers on patrol at the junction of Front Street and Parliament Street spotted a man on a motorcycle at around 2.25 p.m., who was travelling past at a high rate of speed.

Observing that the man had an unfastened helmet, they followed the motorcycle as it continued through the junction of Front Street and Burnaby Street, almost colliding with a car stopped at a red traffic light.

When the suspect arrived at Hamilton Ferry Terminal, he rode his cycle on to the dock.

?At this point, the officer got out of the Police vehicle and stopped the suspect at the ferry terminal gate.

?The man got off the cycle and attempted to push past the officer and a struggle ensued. The officer requested additional Police units during the struggle, as the suspect attempted to discard two objects,? said the spokesman.

Officers from the Marine Unit arrived on the scene and assisted in arresting the suspect.

The two objects were recovered and the suspect, an 18-year-old Smith?s Parish man, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug. Inquiries into the incident are underway.
