Though he lied to Police, Miguel Butterfield walked out of Magistrates' Court with a mere fine.

The 18-year-old Warwick man pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified on December 19.

Crown counsel Graveney Bannister told the court Police saw the man riding with an unfastened helmet along tribe road in Warwick.

When stopped he told Police: "I don't have a license. I'm from the States.'' In court yesterday, Mr. King asked Butterfield which `states' he was from.

In a pronounced Bermudian accent the man said, "None.'' In an attempt to clear up the young man's confusion Mr. King explained that a tourist does not need a license.

"People from the states don't have to have a license when they come here,''he said.

He added that long term residents place blue stickers on their bikes or obtain a livery cycle.

As the audience and the young man chuckled, Mr King explained that he would fine the man between $500 and $1,000 and he asked what was appropriate.

The young man requested that he be fined $500 -- the fee Mr King had chosen anyway.

Telling him not to get caught again, Mr King said he would not further disqualify the man.

"A man is not a thief until he is caught stealing,'' he said.
