G&S Society tackle Sondheim's take on the Brothers Grimm

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda have announced that tickets for Stephen Sondheim's wonderful, magical and fantastical multi Tony Award winning musical, 'Into The Woods' are on sale.

'Into The Woods' reintroduces us to the popular characters from children's literature from Jack and his Beanstalk to Cinderella, her slipper and Prince, Little Red Riding Hood and her Wolf, Rapunzel and her hair, and of course the story would not be complete without the wicked Witch.

For the purposes of the musical, all the characters have to secure a wish by taking a trip into the woods and in doing so mix, clash and overlap with dramatic, hilarious and chaotic results, in a way that the brothers Grimm never imagined.

In doing so however, we also discover the sad and hilarious unseen consequences of each character's successfully completed story.

For example, have you ever considered what difficulty Jack had in trying to dispose of the dead Giant's body; or Rapunzel's fall from grace and teenage pregnancy; Little Red Riding Hood's sudden blood lust; and most perfectly, Cinderella's struggle to walk home after the ball with only one shoe, whilst being pursued by a Prince she does not find attractive from a party she found boring.

The show is funny, touching and heart warming and although based on fairy tales is far from simple, artificial or pantomime like.

In fact, like the previous musicals by Stephen Sondheim such as 'Sweeney Todd', 'West Side Story', and the Pulitzer Prize winning 'Sunday in the Park with George', 'Into The Woods' is a supreme achievement.

It is a great work of art that asks important questions of its audience such as how choices define us as people; what it is to be part of a society; how and where should we find value; and ultimately everyone's responsibility towards one other.

For this production the G&S Society welcome first time director Nick Bligh whose previous successes on the Island include'A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum' in 2002 and 'Assassins'in 2001, both for Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society, and with Mark Dorrell, who will be musical director for this show also.

From last year's Gilbert & Sullivan Society sell out success, 'Fiddler On The Roof', the designer, Cleo Pettit, has returned with what promises to be a wondrous and magical set design to rival the magic of the book and music.

With a wonderful cast hewn from Bermuda's finest we have Eugene De Rosa as the Wolf; mother and daughter Nancy and Paige Thompson, as the Baker's Wife and Little Red Riding Hood respectively and Paula MacGuire as the Witch, to name but a few.

With great songs, witty dialogue and a stunning set, this promises to be a thrilling, fascinating and challenging evening of musical theatre, for adults and children alike, and most decidedly not to be missed.

'Into The Woods' opens on the October 6 and runs until October 16 each night at 8 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday October 10, at 3 p.m. On opening night there will be a complimentary reception when the audience can meet the cast and crew after the show.

Tickets are available for purchase at the City Hall Box office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or online at www.boxoffice.bm.
