Love joins field for three-tour challenge

Newly-crowned PGA champion Davis Love was added to the list as sponsors Gillette yesterday confirmed their star-studded 24-player field for next month's inaugural Tour Challenge Championship at Mid Ocean Club.

Love, who took part in the Merrill Lynch Shoot-out at Mid Ocean two years ago only to be eliminated on the opening hole, joins some illustrious company which includes his US Ryder Cup team-mates Fred Couples and Scott Hoch.

Among the 16 men -- eight from the PGA Tour and eight from the Senior PGA Tour -- no less than seven have won at least one of golf's majors -- Love, Couples, Nick Price, Craig Stadler, Payne Stewart, Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino.

The ladies line-up is led by 1997 LPGA Tour money leader Annika Sorenstam and also includes the likes of Nancy Lopez and Karrie Webb.

The 18-hole, $1.8 million tournament, scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, will see players from each of the Tours team up in eight threesomes.

Gillette have put together a field which consists of the top money-winners from the 45-event season-long Tour Challenge series as well as some of the leading money winners from each of the tours.

Price, Couples, Stadler and Stewart from the PGA Tour had been confirmed as sponsors' invitees earlier this year but Love was added this week as well as Mark Brooks, John Cook and Scott Hoch. Brooks currently leads the Tour Challenge money list with $20,500 in seven events.

Of the seniors, Irwin, Trevino and Jim Colbert had already been confirmed although a question mark hung over Colbert's visit because of recent surgery for prostate cancer. However, a previous leading money winner on the Senior Tour, Colbert has told organisers he expects to be fit.

Rounding out the seniors are Australian Graham Marsh, Gil Morgan, Walter Morgan, Bob Murphy and Jay Sigel. Irwin currently leads the Senior Tour money list while Walter Morgan has collected $23,500 in nine events to top the Tour Challenge series.

Besides Sweden's Sorenstam, who visited Bermuda earlier this year for a golf clinic, veteran American Lopez and Australian Webb, the women's field includes Chris Johnson, Sally Little, Michelle McGann, Barb Mucha and Kelly Robbins.

Sorenstam, Webb, Robbins and Johnson currently hold down the first four spots respectively on the LPGA money list with Lopez sixth and McGann ninth.

Sorenstam has won five Tour events since January while McGann, Robbins, Webb and Johnson have all triumphed twice, and Lopez once.

ABC-TV will televise the event on a tape-delay basis.

Meanwhile, Gillette have announced that during the event they will hand over a $500,000 donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the official national charity of the LPGA Tour.

In addition, five amateurs will take part in the Putting Challenge play-off, the winner of which will get chance to take a single 10-foot putt worth one million dollars.
