Youngsters in hunt for medals at CAC meet

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson expects this year’s team competing in the CAC Age Group Championships will be in the mix for podium finishes during the two-day event that starts today in the British Virgin Islands. The squad includes Anasia Barclay and Demiqua Daniels in the 11-12 girls division, Elisha Darrell and Aaron Jacobs in the 11-12 boys’ division, while Jordan Bascome and Azaire Smith will compete in the 13-14 girls’ age group.Tez Terry, Daiquin Arorash take part in the 13-14 boys’ events. For Bascome, it will be a return to a competition in which she won gold last time around, while Smith has been in good form and recently competed at the Carifta Games.Having seen the team take home fourth place last year, Watson is hopeful of winning more medals this time around while at the same time giving the youngsters valuable experience.“We have sent a pretty strong team to the championships, said Watson. “The girls’ 11-12 team are strong and it will be interesting to see how they handle their first international competition as well.“ I think this is a strong team and at the last championships we placed fourth overall so this time we could possibly do better.“These athletes have been well prepared as we have had several of our coaches assisting in all of the different events so they have been exposed to all of the areas with specialised coaches in each event.“Our hope is that some of these athletes shine in these events other than the running and we can begin to prepare them in a field event for the Carifta Games. We may even develop multi-events from this competition. “The competition starts today and ends tomorrow.Travelling team: 11-12 girls Anasia Barclay, Demiqua Daniels; 11-12 boys Elisha Darrell, Aaron Jacobs, 13-14 girls Jordan Bascome, Azaire Smith; 13-14 boys Tez Terry, Daiquin ArorashTeam manager Jarita Vickers; Coach Paul Simons.
