tomorrow to make a pitch for a multi-purpose sports complex on the vacated US Naval Annex in Southampton.

Groups including the Bermuda Karting Association and the Bermuda Bicycling Association are to meet with Management and Technology Minister the Hon. Grant Gibbons, the Minister responsible for the takeover of the US Bases.

The meeting is designed to present a proposal to establish a multi-based complex for outdoor sports, including go-kart racing.

Bermuda Karting Association president Mr. Ronald Wallington said: "We would like to set up a new oval track in the future on the site where the existing track is,'' he said. "We consider the Base an ideal spot to keep fenced off to use for sporting activities.'' Mr. Jeff Payne of the Bermuda Bicycling Association said: "The idea of a sporting complex grew out of a mutual need by many of the local sporting associations to find somewhere to compete,'' he said.

"We hope that we will be part of the final package when a plan is devised to use the land.'' Government has had numerous ideas sent its way for uses of the Base lands including a proposal for a new lavish golf course.

"Economics seems to be playing a large part in the decision making process which is sad considering the fact that a lot of children could benefit from another sporting area in the Island,'' Mr. Wallington said.

"The club has a good track record and we have the potential to not only give people interested in a fun hobby an outlet, but also teach them how to drive properly.'' Other sporting associations involved with the meeting include the Bermuda Autocycle Union, The Bermuda Powerboat Association, The Model Flying Club and the Tornado Sailing Club.

Mr. Wallington said he expects an answer from Government by the end of June.
