Tourism figures for the second quarter of 2013 show a “strong” 17.2 percent drop for cruise ship arrivals, according to the Department of Statistics — ascribed to the Island’s 22 fewer ship visits over last year.A total of 133,676 passengers came to the Island, spending $28.7 million during their visit — versus 161,351 spending $34.2 million for the same period in 2012.And, despite an incremental decline in air arrivals, spending rose $3 million to a total of $102.3 million for tourists in that category.Overall, air arrivals dropped a notch at 0.2 percent: the Island hosted 75,013 visitors by air — down from last year’s 75,186.Visits from Canada were down 9.4 percent, which the Department attributed to Air Canada reducing its daily service to Bermuda from Toronto.Arrivals from the US were up 0.6 percent, and UK air arrivals rose by 8.1 percent over last year. Other countries showed a 4.6 percent decline.Bermuda’s hotels saw a rise in their takings, with $87 million for the second quarter. Small hotels registered the largest growth in sales, up 12 percent.However, the hotel industry overall experienced a decline in employment: at the end of July this year, there were 2,373 people employed in the industry — a 3.3 percent drop on last year.Retail sales dropped by 0.3 percent during the second quarter, with a gross turnover $258.1 million.
