It's sad that Burch's comments appear to reflect opinion of Cabinet

WHILST a large segment of Bermudian people are experiencing rents beyond their ability to afford, we have the Minister responsible for finding solutions to their plight, going out of his way to become embroiled in controversy (with an obvious licence to say whatever he pleases).

Unfortunately, amidst the long list of outrageous statements made by this Minister over the last seven years of the PLP's reign, his most recent barrage of statements can be characterised as follows:

1. Startling ? was Senator David Burch's comments, which brought into question the appointment and by extension the tenure of the incoming Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment.

2. Astounding ? that Senator Burch's comments about the appointment of the incoming Commanding Officer had to be challenged and contradicted by his Cabinet colleague the Minister of Labour & Home Affairs.

3. Distressing ? that Senator Burch publicly called for the recall of the Governor during the Senator's tirade when he was bringing into disrepute the administration of the Bermuda Regiment.

4. Surprising ? that Senator Burch would also publicly call into question the immigration policies of his own Government, when speaking to Rotary.

5. Confusing ? when the Minister of Labour & Home Affairs has to correct the statements of Senator Burch on his public utterances on the immigration policy.

6. Shocking ? is the deliberate silence by the Premier concerning the statements as this unacceptable fiasco is played out as separate incidences within a seven-day period and imputed the integrity of many persons.

7. Sad ? As we must conclude that Senator Burch's comments reflect the opinion of the Cabinet under the rules of collective responsibility and the failure of the Premier to denounce the statements as outrageous with all deliberate speed.
