Selassie texts sought ways to rid Rhiana of unborn child, jury hears
Text messages indicating a sexual relationship between teenager Rhiana Moore and Ze Selassie in the months before her murder were read to a jury yesterday.
Rhiana told Selassie she was pregnant a few months before her death. His responses indicate he was advising that they should have sex in a bid to get rid of the unwanted baby. The pair also refer to Selassie getting drinks and pills for Rhiana for the same purpose.
The final texts in a long sequence beginning in December 2007 end with the pair making arrangements to meet after the 14-year-old attended a church group on the evening of Friday, May 30 last year.
That morning, Selassie now on trial for Rhiana's murder texted the teenager to tell her: "I don't ever wanna be without you. You are my heartbeat." Rhiana, who was by now around seven months pregnant, replied: "Oh, that's sweet."
That night, Rhiana left the youth group telling teacher Jenna Bean that she did not need her usual lift home. The text messages between her and Selassie, read to the jury yesterday, appear to show she'd actually arranged to meet him and he was waiting close by.
In the last exchange of messages, Rhiana told Selassie at 9.19 p.m that she was on her way out of the youth group to meet him. Prosecutors allege that Selassie murdered the 14-year-old with premeditation later that night meaning he'd formed an intention to do it beforehand.
A final text message from his cell phone to Rhiana's was sent at 11.15 a.m the next day, while relatives were searching for her. It read: "Call your mother. I always told you that you're a queen. It's time to act like one and go home."
No reply came. Just 23 minutes later, Rhiana's body was found in the water at a nature reserve in Hamilton Parish. She'd been stabbed 18 times. A forensic pathologist has told the trial that the body had likely been in the water a couple of hours. DNA tests revealed that Selassie is 99.9 percent likely to have fathered the unborn baby.
Rhiana and Selassie are said by prosecutors to have been involved in a secret relationship, with the teenager's mother unaware of the situation and the pregnancy. Selassie, now 33, denies murder.
In text message exchanges beginning in early December 2007, Rhiana made apparent references to sex with Selassie such as: "Yeah, and I really want to go all the way this time."
The exchanges, which were at times graphic in nature, saw Selassie detail what he was planning, suggesting doing it in a car and also asking the teenager in January 2008: "Would you ever do a threesome?" The youngster replied telling him she was unsure about the idea.
Police officer Peter Stableford and Crown counsel Larissa Burgess played the roles of Selassie and Rhiana as they read the prolific texts to the jury yesterday.
They often demonstrated affectionate language, with Selassie referring to Rhiana as "babes", "my lovely wife" and "my queen". Rhiana told him "you're my first true love" and called him "my king." However, she complained in January 2008 "you always want to have sex with me" and "every single time that we're alone I don't want to do it."
On March 15 Rhiana confirmed she was pregnant. The following week she complained of feeling sick and tired. Dozens of texts over the following months showed Selassie repeatedly urging Rhiana to have sex with him, although some of her replies indicate she was reluctant. He also texted her at one point: "I will probably get some alcohol and stuff to help you relax but this time you have to just drink it and do what I say."
Selassie appears to suggest in many of the texts that the pair have to have sex in order to "get rid of" Rhiana's baby. In March he texted the teenager to say: "I just feel depressed lately because I'm scared to go (to) jail."
Rhiana indicated she did not want to have the baby, answering Selassie's question about whether she did or not with: "Hell no, my life would be over".
In April, Selassie told Rhiana he was sorting out his life, fearing he would go to jail for getting her pregnant and telling her he was scared. In the week leading up to her death in May, Rhiana and Selassie still appeared to be discussing the idea that having sex and Rhiana drinking a drink and taking pills provided by Selassie would get rid of the baby.
According to prosecutors, Selassie was seen driving at speed out of Ferry Reach in St. George's around 10-10.30 p.m on the night Rhiana went missing, with the front passenger seat of his car down. He was also allegedly spotted by a witness in a St. David's boatyard later that same night, arguing with someone in his car and yelling: "What are you doing to me Rhi?"–The teenager's body was found at 11.38 a.m the following morning and Selassie was arrested later that day. The case continues.
