Conference planned on catastrope reinsurance
Bermuda in October.
The conference, scheduled for October 4 and 5 at the Princess Hotel, will explore ways of managing catastrophe risk.
It is targeted at insurance company managers involved with the purchase of catastrophe reinsurance.
The conference has been timed between the 1994 hurricane season and the January insurance renewal season, and will feature presentations on area such as catastrophe exposure management and modelling, reinsurance markets old and new, what reinsurance underwriters look for, and non-traditional risk management techniques.
Mr. Douglas J. Collins, principal in Towers Perrin and manager of the Bermuda office of Tillinghast/Towers Perrin, said the market is changing rapidly.
"One of the non-traditional approaches that will be addressed is the use of catastrophic reinsurance futures as a way of hedging risks,'' he said. "We will be looking at this and other innovative methods of managing catastrophe exposure. We also expect to provide a forum for discussion of the computer models that measure catastrophe loss potentials.
"These models are becoming increasingly sophisticated and valuable management tools for insurers and reinsurers.'' Mr. Douglas Collins.
