Select Bermudian students to be introduced to insurance world

Select Bermudian college students will receive a formal introduction to the booming insurance and reinsurance industries next month.

The BIIYM Careers Committee, an educational sub-committee of the Bermuda Insurance Institute, will be hosting a networking cocktail party for junior and senior college students on August 12.

"We are hoping to introduce interested and bright students to professionals in the Bermuda insurance and reinsurance industries through this event,'' said BIIYM Careers Committee President Lorene Philips.

"The idea is to increase the level of awareness of educational and career opportunities to students, so that they don't wait until the last moment to find jobs, or funds to pursue their degrees. Networking provides an informal and fun way to do that.'' The BIIYM will have speakers discussing college scholarships offered by the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies, along with Bermudian actuaries, underwriters, brokers and accountants discussing their respective careers and companies.

The event, to be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, is co-sponsored by Colonial Insurance Limited, Renaissance Reinsurance Limited, and Stockton Reinsurance Limited.

It is expected that 150 to 200 Bermuda College and returning college students will be invited to attend the party.

Since its incorporation, the BIIYM Careers Committee has focused on its mission of educating the Bermudian public about career opportunities in the local and exempt insurance and reinsurance arenas.

Interested students should contact Delma Parfitt at the Bermuda Insurance Institute on 295-1596. Additional invitations will be extended on a space available basis only.
