TV watchdogs probe Independence forum
forthcoming referendum breached broadcasting regulations.
On Monday night, ZBM screened a programme featuring a panel of three UBP members in a referendum debate, sponsored by the Party.
However, the Telecommunications Commission received complaints following the television show that it had run for longer than 60 minutes, the time allowed under the Political Broadcasting Directions of 1980.
Commission chairman, Mrs. Louise Jackson, said yesterday: "I am in the process of dealing with the company now. It appears they have gone beyond the 60 minutes allowed.'' Under the Directions it is possible that ZBM could have its licence revoked, but it was stressed yesterday that the Commission had never taken such a step and had "always enjoyed a good working relationship with both stations''.
Mrs. Jackson added: "I had several complaints following the programme.'' Mrs.
Jackson also said the TV station had also allegedly contravened another section of the Directions, but refused to say which.
The programme featured three UBP MPs the Hon. Irving Pearman, the Hon. Jerome Dill and the Hon. Maxwell Burgess and was screened at 8 p.m.
Yesterday, Mr. Rick Richardson, managing director of the Bermuda Broadcasting Company, which owns ZBM, said he was not aware of the investigation.
