Darby leads local gymnasts

Maria Darby emerged as Bermuda's top gymnast in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games when she finished 14th out of 24 competitors on Wednesday night in El Salvador.

In her second round of rotations, Darby continued where she left off in the qualifying round as the Island's leading scorer by amassing 29,416 points.

She scored 8,150 on the vault, 6,333 on the bars, 7,033 on the beam and 7,900 on the floor mat. Her team-mates Mornay Piper and Casey Lopes finished 19th and 22nd respectively with Piper scoring 27, 866 (7,850 - vault; 6,300 - bars; 6,216 - beam; 7,500 - floor mat) and Lopes 27,333 (7,250 - vault; 5,800 - bars; 6,933 - beam; 7,350 - floor mat).

The competition was won by Elsa Rodriguez of Mexico (35, 266 points) while the silver and bronze medals went to Colombia's Leydy Blanco (34,682) and Mexico's Laura Moreno (34,616).

Meanwhile, the Island's lone TaeKwon Do representative, Iejaa Caines, was brushed aside 13-0 by Rouel Jerez of the Dominican Republic in the opening round of competition in the Men's Over 84kg category.
