Hatherley looks to finish series strongly

The Bermuda Bicycle Association’s mountain biking season is heading to its conclusion on Sunday with the Winners Edge Mountain Biking Championship race to be held at Ferry Reach Park.It will be the final event in the three month season which includes ten events. With all adult riders racing in a single category, Dexter Swan and Hans Hirschi, first and second in Male B category of the Conrad’s MTB Points Series, will test themselves against the Male A group this year. Both Swan and Hirschi, as well as Male A series winner Neil de Ste Croix, chose not to race in last weekend’s race in preparation for the final show down.Meanwhile, a resurgent Mark Hatherley showed his improving form at Ferry Reach Park with a convincing win over Grant Goudge to give Hatherley second place in the series and with Goudge finishing third last weekend. The junior champion title seems destined to be repeated by Dominique Mayho who rode a very strong race last Sunday.Despite a recurring mechanical problem which required him to make several stops in addition to one tumble, Mayho hung on to take third in the series race ahead of Mark Brown. All cyclists 18 and under will contest the junior championship race but whether Tre-shun Correia can have a breakout performance or much younger Daniel Oatley can overcome the odds remains to be seen.Last Sunday’s race was also the conclusion of the schools competition which saw Saltus Academy claim victory over Somersfield Academy, Warwick Academy and Bermuda Institute. Daniel Oatley, Christian Oatley and Jessie Godfrey were the top riders in the competition.Somersfield students have benefitted from a regular mountain biking club run by Brown and the interest of students at the Devonshire school appears to be increasing.Championship racing starts on Sunday, March 27 at 9.15am and will conclude with the presentation of the Championship awards following the last race.
