Bennett, Vallis take titles
Bennett, who lives in Florida, produced three birdies in miserable conditions to beat defending champion Dick Stimets in the Senior Championship final of the Mid Ocean Invitational yesterday.
In the Junior Championship, Dr. Robert Vallis added to his local honours by winning his second straight Mid Ocean crown, beating David Ezekial 3 & 2 in the final.
Bennett and Stimets were all square through the front nine before the former won the 11th and 14th to go two up. He survived a three-putt on the 15th before closing out the match on the 16th when Stimets bogeyed.
In contrast to the senior duo, Vallis and Ezekial endured a birdie-less round.
Vallis, the Island's top amateur, is attending a medical course in Scotland but returned this week to defend his title. He heads back to Edinburgh today.
Vallis was one down after seven holes but won the eighth, tenth, 11th and 12th. He lost the 13th but sealed the victory by winning the 14th.
