Water park proposal mulled for Morgan's Point – Premier

A proposal to develop a themed water park at Morgan's Point was one of several initiatives announced yesterday by Premier Ewart Brown.

The Tourism and Transportation Minister said that the proposal is still in the very early stages.

He presented several artist depictions of the proposed site at a press conference yesterday but said there was much work to be done before the park became a reality.

Bermuda Family Entertainment Ltd. is behind the project.

If it is approved by the Department of Planning it will be open to both visitors and locals.

"We have much to do in the way of public consultation and studies to ensure that the project will be properly accommodated at the site," said Dr. Brown.

"World class designers have been engaged by these entrepreneurs to provide an attractive, environmentally sensitive and complementary facility for Bermuda."

The Premier also noted hotel developments in various stages of development, including the Park Hyatt Hotel in St. George's, the Par-La-Ville Hotel and Residences in Hamilton and the Morgan's Point hotel project.

"There is approximately $2.2 billion earmarked for hotel development on the Island for the next ten years and, despite the worldwide economic downturn, it hasn't deterred investors from demonstrating continued confidence in the Bermuda product," Dr. Brown said.

"It is my wish that those of us who say they love Bermuda love it enough to let these projects proceed."

The Premier also discussed the Department of Tourism's future plans to advertise the Island.

He said the Department was going to continue to work on a strong presence in the North East of the US.

"Our partnership with the Red Sox has resurrected the Bermuda brand awareness in that region," Dr. Brown said.

"Sometimes people say, why don't you fish where the fish are? That's exactly what we're doing."

More than a third of all visitors to the Island in the third quarter of the year came from New York, New Jersey or Massachusetts.

The Government is to increase its efforts towards marketing the Island digitally by introducing a Bermuda application, or "app", for the iPhone.

Dr. Brown also said that the Ministry is currently reviewing a proposal that "positions Bermuda favourably" through reality television.
