Children that the death of a toddler had gone "unnoticed''.

And they said an investigation into D'shun Dill's death on December 14 last year was still "active''.

A 28-year-old Hamilton Parish man was arrested last Boxing Day -- but Police spokesman Insp. Coghlin Gibbons said no charges had yet been laid.

To Coalition for the Protection of Children official Ms Sheelagh Cooper this was cause for concern.

"It is as though the death of this baby has passed unnoticed by everyone,'' she claimed in a Press release.

She went on to criticise the Department of Social Services, suggesting it should have had a role in the welfare of the boy before his death.

Yesterday Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness said Police were investigating the death, and it was "quite possible'' charges would be laid.

"I am therefore advised that the matter is sub judice and no comment should be made about this matter at this time which is likely to prejudice the investigation or interfere with the judicial process.

"In so far as the accusations about the Department of Social Services, now Child and Family Services, are concerned, obviously no comment can be made at this time either.

"However, at the appropriate time when a statement can be made without so prejudicing the case and the matter is no longer sub judice a statement of the involvement of the department will be made.'' The toddler, formerly of Burchall's Cove, Hamilton Parish, was pronounced dead on the same day he was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

American pathologist Dr. Valerie Rao, of the Dade County medical office, Florida, performed the autopsy and prepared a report for the coroner.

Insp. Gibbons said yesterday it was important not to "rush to judgment'' over the child's death, and the Police had to make a thorough investigation.
