Bermuda War Veterans Association president Frank Farmer said he could not comment last night on the reasons for the closure of the Dundonald Street club but it is known that in recent years the association has had difficulty raising funds to meet members medical needs.

Mr. Farmer said: "All that I have got to say is the club is closing at the end of the month and at the moment the property is up for sale. That is the situation.'' The number of Bermudians and residents who participated in the Second World War and in Korea is dwindling and that may have been the reason behind the closure.

With most surviving members in their late 70s and 80s, there is an increased demand for prescription drugs and for visits overseas for medical treatments.

The Association also provides for veterans' dependents, especially their widows. It also provides for funerals.

It is understood the Association will continue to provide for its members once the asset of the club has been liquidated and added to the general fund.
