Former Finance Minister to be honoured

Former UBP Finance Minster Dr. Clarence James is to be honoured at the 6th Annual Salute to Service Award Dinner organised by the Bermuda Health Foundation.

Last year the organisation saluted current Minister of Finance Paula Cox. Other honourees have included elder statesman Reginald Burrows, Bruce Barritt, Rev. Vernon G. Lambe, Sr. and Liz Boden.

Dr. James, CBE, JP, is being recognised for his contribution to Bermuda politics, his involvement in Freemasonry as well as his achievements in the medical field.

Phillip Butterfield, chairman of the Foundation said: "Our Foundation is a Bermuda registered charity that was founded by myself, my brothers Vincent Hollinsid and (Premier) Dr. Ewart Brown and Murray Brown.

"The primary purpose of the Foundation is to provide scholarships for Bermudian students pursuing careers in the medical field.

"It is common knowledge that there is a shortage of healthcare providers globally and Bermuda is no exception.

"Hence the efforts of the Foundation to assist as many students as possible who have chosen to serve the Bermudian community through medicine."

According to Mr. Butterfield, who is also the CEO of the Bank of Bermuda HSBC, the Foundation has provided nearly $130,000 in scholarships.

He added: "In 2004 we gave three scholarships worth $7,000 each. Last year we awarded four scholarships worth $12,000 each.

"This year we have received more than 40 applications and we're very excited that this list includes several Bermudian young men who are pursuing careers in the medical field — to date, recipients have only been females."

Mr. Butterfield said in addition to the Service Award Dinner, which will be held on June 20 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, the BHF will also host a golf tournament on the Saturday after the dinner.

"The business community has been invited to support our efforts through sponsorship," Mr. Butterfield explained.

"There are two levels of sponsorship. Ten thousand-dollar sponsors will receive tickets for a table of ten at the dinner, a full-page advertisement in our souvenir journal and entrance for a four-person team in Saturday's golf tournament.

"Meanwhile, $5,000 sponsors will receive tickets for a table of ten at the dinner."

Tickets for the dinner are on sale for $150.00. Those interested should contact LaVerne Furbert at 293-8232.
