Death crash driver faces jail sentence

The driver of a car which ploughed over an embankment, killing a teenage passenger will go to prison after pleading guilty to the offence in Supreme Court yesterday.

Tarik White, 24 of Hamilton Parish pleaded guilty to causing the death of 19-year-old Troylisha Samantha Outerbridge by reckless driving.

White also pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm by reckless or dangerous driving to two other passengers, Jelani Hollis and Tashae Bean. A fourth passenger, Jeron Douglas, suffered bruising and leg injuries while White sustained a broken rib and lung injury.

The horror smash took place on an embankment at Shelly Bay Field on North Shore Road in the early hours of March 7, 2003.

Ms Outerbridge, of Broken Hill Lane in Smith?s, was pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital at 4.30 a.m. that morning.

In Supreme Court yesterday, Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said three other counts against White were to be removed from the indictment as she accepted his guilty pleas.

White?s lawyer, Elizabeth Christopher, asked for a pre-sentencing Social Inquiry Report to be conducted for her client. She also said he was a young father.

Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons asked if there was a question of a substance abuse which could ?direct to the his behaviour on the night he committed the offence? and a BARC report was also ordered.

However, when Ms Clarke asked for White to be remanded pending his mention at the next arraignment?s session, Ms Christopher said: ?There was no need to remand him as there was no issue with him presenting himself to the court.?

But Mrs. Justice Simmons disagreed and remanded White in custody.

?He has pleaded guilty to a very serious offence that on the face of the indictment a custodial sentence is called for,? she said.

She told White: ?Due to the seriousness of the offence, I remand you in custody as an immediate custodial sentence on the face of the indictment will be necessary?.

White will reappear in Supreme Court for mention on Tuesday February 1.
