The Island's leaders yesterday paid tribute to senior citizens' contributions and tireless spirit.

"You've helped to lead Bermuda in the direction we have gone in,'' Premier Pamela Gordon told the group of seniors at the official launch of Senior Citizens' Week yesterday.

The event, sponsored by the Ministry of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Island Wide Seniors Social Committee, was held at City Hall and honoured the contributions of senior citizens in Bermuda.

It also presented awards for community achievement to Muriel Archer, Melvina Caines, Edna Gamble, Hattie Gilbert, Kathleen Grant, Olive Hart, Lois Joell and Gladys Lowe.

The programme also recognised special centenarian Ora Tucker for the accomplishments of her long and healthy life.

Another special couple's awards was presented to Burton and Florence Bean who have been married for 66 years and have 19 children, 45 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Leader of the Opposition Jennifer Smith told the senior citizens: "You are the keepers of our heritage and it is your responsibility to pass it on.'' Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs Yvette Swan also reminded the audience that "being retired doesn't mean your tired''.

Sen. Swan also requested that seniors take a tape recorder and record all of their memories as they constitute the history of Bermuda.

The crowd of seniors, friends and families enjoyed the music of the Richard Allen Combo band and also the Dellwood Primary School choir's special song, "Fish Cakes''.

Other upcoming events for Senior Citizens' Week include a picnic and jazz concert.
