The United Bermuda Party scored a resounding victory in Devonshire South Central thanks to veteran politician John Barritt.

Mr. Barritt received 747 votes, or 90 percent, of the ballots cast. The PLP's Dorothy A. Burch received 83, or ten percent, of the votes.

"I'm very pleased by the results," said Mr. Barritt. "I was encouraged by what people said during my canvassing. I worked hard and I am extremely please with the turnout.

"I want to thank the people of Devonshire South Central for putting their trust in me."

Mr. Barritt said he was looking forward to serving his constituents under the new one-man, one-vote electoral system, predicting that it will lead to greater accountability and stronger bond between voters and their representative.

"I noticed a difference between running under this new electoral system and the old one," he said. "The canvassing was different because it was a smaller constituency. There was less people to cover.

"I think it will allow for a more direct relationship and that is a good thing for the voters. It might be a challenge for the representative, but personally, I'm looking forward to being held accountable."

Both candidates braved the blazing sun and soaring temperatures to greet voters as they turned up to cast their ballots at Horticultural Hall.

As the polling station closed its doors, Ms Burch - a veteran candidate - said regardless of what the results were, she was please with her performance. "I am generally happy with the campaign."
