College buddies hop to spell trouble

today hoping that they can help put the FA Cup back in Dandy Town's trophy case before pursuing professional careers in England and the United States.

Paynter, who completes his recreation and leisure studies at the end of June and graduates in December, is due to travel to Northampton Town in July/ August with Kyle Lightbourne and Albert Smith for trials.

Cann may just become the Island's second indoor professional after revealing this week that he had been offered trials with top Major Soccer League (MSL) team San Diego Sockers.

Cann, who graduates in August, was spotted while playing in an amateur indoor tournament in Atlanta in mid-March with a team he represents in Virginia Beach called National Security.

"We didn't fare too well, we were knocked out in the first round,'' Cann said of his team's fortunes. "I played three games and scored four goals and was the leading scorer for my team.'' The indoor is quite different from the outdoor game, Cann has found out, but he feels he can make the adjustment. "The indoor is quite complementary to how I play,'' he said. "It's very fast and you have to have a lot of speed and skill, which I have.'' Both Paynter, 24, and 25-year-old Cann are hoping to help Town land the FA Cup for the second time.

Cann was also a student in 1986-87 when they beat the Zebras in a replay, scoring one of the goals in the 2-2 draw in the first match.

Paynter joined the team the next season from St. George's and helped them land the league and Martonmere Cup in his first season. This will be his first FA Cup final.

"We definitely need this one,'' he said. "Both teams have a good chance of winning it. It depends on which team comes ready to play and is more geared up for it.'' Depending on how the trials go this could be one of Paynter's last matches for Town. If he does not succeed in the trials, St. George's are hoping he returns to lead them in the First Division next season.

Paynter played down transfer talks, stressing he is not looking any further than the trip to England.

"That's what I'm really looking at right now,'' he said. "I'm just looking forward to going out there and giving a good account of myself. I see this as my last opportunity (to turn pro).

"My main emphasis is on England. It's always been my goal but nothing I've dwelled on, just something in the back of my mind.'' Cann, an Electrical Engineering major, is also looking forward to his return this weekend. "I'm looking forward to helping the team any way I can and I'm sure Neil feels the same,'' he said. "The FA Cup is a nice cup to play in.

It's the most prestigious one and anyone can win on the day. The pressure is on them because we'll be the underdogs. A lot of their guys have never won the FA Cup before.'' NEIL PAYNTER -- Could be playing his last match for Dandy Town.
