The winter storm which killed ten people in the United States played havoc with Bermuda-bound flights over the weekend ? a situation which could continue today.

The late night flight from New York was cancelled on Friday and Saturday, the Boston and Newark flights were cancelled on Saturday and yesterday?s Delta Boston flight was cancelled while today?s is in doubt.

Airport Duty Manager Arthur Adams said: ?Boston has taken a hammering with snow throughout the day.? Last night he said there had been no official indication of what would happen today.

Poor weather also delayed yesterday?s noon flight from JFK by over three hours although the late night flight was set to come in from the same location.

Residents of the US Northeast were coping with a Nor?easter that dumped more than two feet of snow in places and slammed waves over coastal seawalls. The powerful storm that started ploughing up the coast on Friday began losing strength Sunday.

Travel restrictions forced local organisers to delay the start of this week?s 51st annual Goodwill Golf Championships. Most of the 96 teams competing in the four-day tournament come from North American teams but were unable to fly into the Island over the weekend because of delayed or cancelled flights.

The event, due to start today, will now begin tomorrow and continue on Wednesday which had been set aside as a rest day.

Locally, Bermuda Weather Centre said 1.3 inches of rain fell overnight Saturday while winds gusted up to 47 knots with 33 knots sustained winds.
