Car vandalism is 'hate crime', says victim

Angry: Curlee Seymour's car was vandalised with the words "Bitch jump up".

A Jamaican woman was a victim of what she called a hate crime yesterday morning when an unknown person spray painted a racial slur on her car.

Curlee Seymour of Pembroke had an unpleasant surprise when she looked on the left side of her Honda CR-V and saw 'bitch jump up' in white letters.

She explained she got home at 12.20 a.m. yesterday morning from her job at Lefroy House and sat in the car for about 15 minutes listening to music.

Ms Seymour explained when she parks the vehicle, the left side faces the building and the right side faces the road.

When she got up yesterday morning, she entered the car from the right side and didn't check the left side. She said she never checks the left side because she gets in on the right side out of habit.

Ms Seymour said she drove to her friend's house just after 9 a.m. and that's when she saw the message.

"I saw the left side of the car and then I was so shocked because it wasn't there last night. It was done overnight," she said.

Ms Seymour explained the situation has infuriated her because the term "jump up" is a derogatory name for Jamaicans and by using the word bitch, whoever did the act is calling her a Jamaican bitch.

"This is a malicious hate crime. The Police said this a wicked act. It could be a Jamaican or it could be a Bermudian.

"There are some nasty Jamaicans in Bermuda who try to be Bermudian".

And she said she would not have very kind words to say to whoever spray-painted her car.

"If I catch them, I will take them down. That person is lucky I didn't catch them. It's not funny at all. My car cost about $50,000 and it's not even two years old yet."

Ms Seymour said a P.c. Williams took her statement and will be investigating the situation.
