Park, Cook claim title
Former ice hockey great Brad Park and his partner Peter Cook fired a final round 68 to hold off a late charge by a group of players to lift the net division in the annual Founder's Trophy golf tournament at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.
Park and Cook had led by six shots going into yesterday's final round after a sizzling 63 on Thursday.
But on a day which began with torrential rain they quickly saw their lead diminish in a field of some 140 players, and eventually got home by just two strokes.
The low round of the day came from Christopher Wightman and Joe Marengi who fired a 61, equalled by John Pereira and Peter Cook Jr. (son of the winner). Second place in the net division was shared by Mid Ocean Club veteran Tom Stearns and his partner Alan Leyland, and Wightman and Marengi. Both had totals of 260.
In the gross division, Malcolm Gosling Jr and Jim Murray also saw their overnight lead greatly reduced, but hung on for the victory with a round of 73.
Eight shots ahead going into the last round, they won by three strokes over the team of Bob and Rob McMenimon who returned a fine 68 yesterday.
The low gross round was posted by past champions Robert Vallis and Jack White who fired 67 to finish fourth overall.
