The Development Applications Board gave Government permission to set up a VHF Radio Finding Tower on Sentinel Hill in Southampton.

Last November St. Anne's residents sent a petition and written statement against the scheme to Planning.

But the Board granted permission to a revised plan on the condition that prior to the start of building a separate application for a building permit be made and approved.

Former Works Minister Leonard Gibbons, last year, said: "The installation is needed by Harbour Radio to cover the waters at the west end of the Island with VHF radio.'' One of those opposed to the tower, Harley Hayward, yesterday told The Royal Gazette that residents had a meeting with Richard Parks of Marine and Ports to discuss the matter.

Mr. Hayward said the residents were told of the importance of the tower and were assured that it would only be a small one, surrounded by shrubs and plants.
