Mallory books semi-final clash with Bradshaw

good friend Allan Dean Smith 6-1, 6-0 in a little over an hour while securing a spot in the semi-finals of the Heineken Bermuda Open.

Mallory, seeded second in men's A singles, will now face Jerome Bradshaw, a winner on Monday night over Sam Maybury 6-4, 6-3.

Number one seed Michael Way defeated Tony Readwin 6-4, 6-4 also on Monday night to earn his place in the semis. He will face brother Brian Way, who yesterday blew apart David Lambert's game, 6-2, 6-3.

Mallory found yesterday's windy conditions more difficult to handle than his opponent.

"I hate playing when it's windy like that,'' Mallory said.

The young righthander, embroiled in a seedings controversy, began his march to the semi-finals with a victory over Andrew Kennedy in a hard-fought struggle at the weekend. Kennedy pulled off a surprise 6-4 victory in the first set and was leading 3-0 in the second set before suffering from cramping. His game quickly fell apart, losing 6-4 and he then retired.

Way's victory over Readwin marked the second time he has defeated him in tournaments this year. In the All Bermuda International Open a few weeks ago, a tournament he would eventually win, Way beat Readwin 6-1, 6-3.

"I think Tony played well,'' said Way of his latest match with Readwin. "We played under the lights and it was difficult for both of us. Those lights are not the best. I couldn't whip over my groundstrokes and it was hard to see the ball at times.'' Way, returning to the local tennis scene this year after living in the United States, has said all along that he would like to win every tournament this year.

Bradshaw, meantime, was victorious over Stephen Carberry (4-6, 7-5, 1-0), who was almost as overwhelmed by his opponent's serve as he was the heat before retiring in the third set.
