A Bermudian student has received a $10,000 scholarship from the Phoenix Stores Limited to study pharmacy.

Chelsey Mapp, 17, is planning to earn a degree in pharmacy from the University of Buffalo, in New York.

"The scholarship was established to support and encourage Bermudian students seeking a career in pharmacy," said Phoenix Stores' president and chief executive officer George Grundmuller.

"We hope that more Bermudian students will choose pharmacy as a viable career."

Miss Mapp worked as an intern at the Phoenix Centre's dispensary this year after graduating from the Bermuda Institute.

An honour roll student, Ms Mapp volunteers at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital as a Candy Striper and at the Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo.

In addition, she also completed a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards.

Ms Mapp's benefactors hope she will succeed in the field as fellow Bermudian Kathy-Ann Louise White did before her.

The scholarship is named in Dr. White's honour.

Dr. White was head pharmacist at Phoenix Stores before she tragically died of breast cancer 12 years ago, at the age of 35.
