Cooke tops in schools tourney

Bermudian tennis player Catherine Cooke has won gold in one of the most competitive Canadian schools tournaments.Teenager Cooke took first place in the high school girls singles in the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) championships.“The tournament was a three-day affair pitting the best players from all schools in the Province of Ontario against each other to determine the champion,” said Cooke’s father, David Cooke.Cooke, who has represented Bermuda in the Junior Federation Cup, is in her final year at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario and was the top seed in the championship, having convincingly won the qualifying tournament of the Ontario Independent Schools Conference a few weeks earlier.After receiving a bye in the first round, she won the following three matches handily before taking the gold in a hard fought final 8-3 against Heather Borsos of Banting Memorial High School in a match played in blustery conditions.
