"We assembled the compressor equipment which creates temperatures suitable for the fridges,'' said Gilbert Darrell Co. Ltd. owner, Mr. Gilbert Darrell.

The compressors, which are located on the top floor of the new building, refrigerate the display cases in the retail section of the shop.

"The compressor transmits gas into a circuit,'' explained Mr. Darrell. "A pipe runs from the compressors to the cases down below. It's a very unique system because one compressor can supply the entire store.

"It's called a parallel system and was built by Tyler Refrigeration. This means instead of having compressors for each piece of equipment, one compressor works within a system. "The gas travels to each box as a liquid, absorbs heat and turns into a gas. There's a continual absorption of heat by gas. The gas then returns to the compressor and turns back into a liquid,'' said Mr. Darrell.

Owner of T.A. Adderley & Sons Ltd., Mr. Gareath Adderley added: "All of our refrigeration is run off of the gas AZ50. It is all recycled and works on a demand system. It's very efficient.'' The parallel system as well as all other refrigeration equipment was supplied by Tyler, a company based in Michigan, USA.

Tyler not only provided T.A. Adderley & Sons Ltd. with the refrigeration equipment, but they designed the store layout, said Mr. Adderley. "We sent Tyler a floor plan of our shop and they designed the lay out of all the refrigeration equipment in the store. We only made two minor changes,'' he noted.

Refrigeration units in the grocery store include 24 feet of frozen foods, 20 feet of produce, 16 feet of both dairy and frozen meat, 12 feet of ice-cream and eight feet of fresh meat displays.

As well, an eight-foot counter displays hot and cold deli foods.
