Barbarians hope for sevens glory

Carribean Seven-A-Side Rugby tournament in Trinidad beginning December 5.

Sean Field will lead the breakaway Bermuda Barbarians squad on their quest for the title they came agonisingly close to winning back in 1990 when they were beaten 14-10 in the final by a team known as Caribs.

Last year saw them reach the quarter-finals before again being ousted by Caribs 10-4.

"We're hoping to go one better this year,'' said squad member Alan Oliver, who plays locally for Police. "This could be third time lucky for us. It would certainly be nice if we go down there and win the thing.'' The competition normally attracts in the region of 24 teams with squads from England, Scotland, Canada, the Americas and the Carribean counted among them.

Teams are separated into groups of six and a round robin is played within each group with the winners going through to the knockout round.

Said Oliver: "The quality of the tournament is quite good and it (competition) attracts a high standard of players.'' Indeed the event often features a number of former and rising, would be internationals.

Of those traveling this time six have previously attended with Oliver, Field, Gareth Davies, Alvin Harvey, Adrian Smith and Matthew Gorman possessing experience at the event.

New faces include Patrick Jones as well as the speedy Andre Simons.

"The key to success will be keeping possession of the ball and getting it to our fast men like Shane (DeMille), Matthew and Andre,'' said Oliver. "We'll certainly do well in the tournament and if we have a bit of luck we can win it.'' Today the team will conduct a training session at Police Field in Prospect starting at 12 noon.

A tour of Florida next March has been penned in for the Bermuda Rugby Football Union (BRFU). While there the National Team will face off against Florida State University and are expected to enter the Space Coast tournament at Cocoa Beach along with a BRFU Second XV Select.
