The foundation is an American, non-profit tax exempt organisation founded to support the athletic programmes of Howard University.

Brown is a graduate of the Washington, DC-based institution and, as one who has aided in the continuance of historically black colleges and young people, has been designated to receive the Buffalo Soldier Award.

"You have been selected as a recipient of this prestigious award because of your remarkable efforts in support of historically black colleges,'' wrote J.Blair (Butch) Hayes, current president of the Bison Foundation. "You are being recognised for you consistent support of athletics at Howard University, your role in the establishment of the Bison Foundation and your continuing interest in the development of the minds and bodies of young people.'' The Bermudian joins a list already containing the likes of John Thompson, head men's basketball coach at nearby Georgetown University and Wayman Smith, vice-president of brewing giant Anheuser Busch.

Ceremonies are scheduled for October 28 on the occasion of the University's homecoming.
