Boat sinks as it arrives

A 39-foot sailing vessel, Aymie-G, on route from Georgetown, South Carolina to the Azores capsized off the coast near St. David's Lighthouse on Saturday evening.

The vessel, which had one person onboard, a 57-year-old British national, attempted to stop in Bermuda for refuelling.

It was at this time the yacht ran aground approximately half a mile east of St. David's Lighthouse.

As a result officers from the Police Marine Unit attended the scene and located the vessel.

Local vessels Lap Top, Heather's Toy and Sand Dollar heard the call on the Bermuda Radio and offered assistance to the Marine Police.

Divers from the Marine Police conducted a thorough search of the capsized vessel with nothing else found.

The Duty Officer of Maritime Operations said: "A survey for raising the vessel was conducted.

"We have located a contractor who has advised that they are capable of extracting the ship."

He said that a decision will be made today as to how to raise the vessel and they shall proceed based on that decision.
