Mom tells court she heard son confess to murder

The mother of two men charged with the murder of Shane Minors alleges she heard son Leroy Symons confess to the crime, Supreme Court heard today.Onika Burchall, 41, took the stand in the trial of sons Ronniko Burchall, 22, and Mr Symons, 21, both charged with the murder of Mr Minors.Mr Minors, 30, was fatally shot outside his Middle Terrace, Pembroke apartment around 1.12am on December 17, 2009.Mr Burchall faces a further charge of using a firearm to commit murder. Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.Ms Burchall told the court Mr Symons “had a lot of struggles coming up as a child” and would blame her for not living with him or being in his life as much as she should have. She said he called her a heroin addict and a prostitute, but denied doing drugs or selling her body for cash.Ms Burchall said: “Ronniko was totally different from Leroy. I never had a lot of problems with Ronniko. I would see him quite a lot. He lived with his aunt but I still got to see him.”She said she went to court when Mr Symons was initially charged with the murder and heard him confess to the crime while leaving the Magistrates’ Court building flanked by a police officer.“He said ‘I shot Shane Minors and there is nothing you can f****ng well do about it.“It was just in an aggressive tone. I didn’t say anything to him, until he called me.”Ms Burchall said she later asked why he said that: “He said to me he was angry,” she told the court.Defence lawyer Shade Subair, representing Mr Symons, quizzed the mom on why she didn’t report this to police.“Because I reported it to my son’s lawyer,” Ms Burchall replied.Ms Subair suggested the mother was “a lot closer” to Mr Burchall than to Mr Symons, but she denied this. The lawyer also put to Ms Burchall that Mr Symons told her he had been approached by Ronniko with a gun asking him how it worked and to get directions to the back way of Mr Minor’s house.“He told you that didn’t he?”, said Ms Subair. “Yes he did,” replied Ms Burchall.“Leroy having told you that Ronniko did these things made you very angry against Leroy.”“It didn’t make me angry but I know the stories that Leroy can tell and make up,” said Ms Burchall. The case continues this afternoon before Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves.
