Netts claim league and cup double

Data Tech Netts completed the League and Knockout Cup double at Bernard Park last night.Netts defeated their ‘B’ team, Signworx, 29-13 to end the Senior Winter League season on a high note.Goal Shooter and co-captain Gina Benjamin poured in a game-high 22 points for Netts while Danielle Onyia replied with nine for Signworx who surpassed the expectations of many by reaching the final.Underdogs Signworx did well to restrict their more seasoned rivals to 11 points in the first half. But Netts’ experience eventually took its toll in the second half as they went on an 18-6 run to put the match beyond their youthful rivals’ reach.Netts co-captain Benjamin felt her team were deserving of the coveted ‘double given the hard work that team members have put in all season.“We worked very hard this year,” she said. “After coming second last year (to Lady Bluebirds) it was determination more than anything, so we wanted to come out there and play hard every game and show the spirit we have. We love netball and put it out on the court every single time we went out there.”Benjamin heaped praised upon Signworx for upsetting the form book by reaching the final.“Our younger team are awesome,” she said. “I’m actually one of the coaches for the team and those girls are truly a sight to see, they put their determination and heart out there and you can see it. They work hard in practise and come out there and play hard. They gave us a run for our money.”Benjamin’s daughter Diara, who plays for Signworx, said reaching the final surpassed her own expectations.“I was actually surprised that we made it this far and hopefully this is the beginning of bigger things to come,” she said. “It’s good to finish second, and we had fun actually.”Netts Netball Club coach Merle Parfitt was pleased to see both of her club’s teams do well in this year’s Knockout Cup tournament.“We could not have asked for anything better,” she said. “I am very pleased with the team and I think the young ones are coming on lovely. They have trained very hard and are coming on nicely.”Earlier in the evening Netts defeated last year’s top team Lady Bluebirds 27-11 in the Knockout Cup semi-final.Co-skipper Benjamin scored 23 points for Netts while Ebonie Burgess shot seven for a Lady Bluebirds side depleted by injuries and work commitments.“Social Club is a team that fights hard to the very end and we love playing them,” Benjamin added. “They don’t give us anything for free and we know we have to come out there with every single pass.”
