The funeral of the first victim of Hurricane Fabian will take place next week.

The family of P.c. Stephen Symons, the only of the four victims of Fabian to be found, will bury the Police officer at the Hamilton Cathedral on Monday at 4 p.m.

The body of the 37-year-old father was washed up on Sunday with his family understood to be relieved it had been found so that a proper burial can take place.

The Bermuda Police service will be involved in the funeral to remember and honour the life of Mr. Symons.

A statement from the Police read: “He was a dedicated member of the Police Service. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during their time of bereavement.”

P.c. Symons, alongside pregnant colleague Nicole O'Connor and civilian station officer Gladys Saunders, were in a Police cruiser that stalled on the Causeway at 2.30 p.m. last Friday.

It is believed they had got out of the vehicle before the huge waves and strong winds of Hurricane Fabian swept them away.

Keen fisherman Manual Pacheco, 23, was also a victim on the Causeway with his wife Monica critical of how early Police gave up the search for her husband and father of her two-year-old.

Although the families of Mrs. Saunders and Mr. Pacheco have all but given up any chance of finding their loved ones, the mother of Mrs. O'Connor refuses to give up hope of her daughter being found, even a week on.
