German-registered tall ship the Alexander von Humboldt will sail out of Bermuda tomorrow after visiting the Island with a number of young trainee sailors on board.

She arrived on Wednesday from Martinique with 58 crew members and will begin her journey to the Azores and St. Malo, France tomorrow, before heading back to Bremerhaven in Germany.

The Alexander von Humboldt is moored near the Flagpole on Front Street in Hamilton, and will be open to the public today.

She is a training ship for people who want to learn to sail and pick up the skills of seamanship. Although some of the crew members are students just learning the ropes, everyone on board has volunteered their services.

The barque, which is sponsored by Beck's Brewery, is 120-feet-long and was built in Bremerhaven in 1906.

Captain Arno Schlamelcher said they had a smooth trip to Bermuda when they travelled north from Martinique.

"It took us 12 days to get here and the weather was beautiful until we were hit by the north winds as we approached Bermuda.

"It is amazingly beautiful here - I have been to many places, but none have been like here."

Mr. Schlamelcher came to the Island in the summer of 2000 as part of the Tall Ships Race.

He said: "Our guide was Bermudian Greg Peters who spoke German, and I would love to be able to meet up with him this time.
