Soldier charged with missing camp

A soldier accused of skipping Regiment duties had his case adjourned after his father said there were mitigating circumstances.

Alexander Joell, 24, of Glebe Road, Pembroke, denied failing to attend 60 duty or training sessions between October 2006 and November 2007.

His father — who did not give his name — told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo he wanted the chance to speak with the Adjutant about the matter.

He explained this was because he had recently found "some information I believe is instrumental in determining how this matter will be dealt with".

However, Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said the Adjutant placed the matter in the hands of the court after giving Joell numerous opportunities to rectify the situation.

Mr. Tokunbo set a trial date of May 28, 2008, and bailed Joell in the meantime.
