yesterday as St. Anne's Pre-school closed its doors for good at the South Shore location.

Starting in September, the pre-schoolers will be relocated to the Cedar Grove school which will be renamed Southampton Pre-school.

Students from Cedar Grove -- a former special school -- will be integrated into regular schools this September.

Meanwhile, St. Anne's head teacher Mrs. Sylvia Caines said teachers and children at the Pre-school will miss the south shore breezes and walks to the beach.

But, she quickly added, they were looking forward to having their own facility.

"It will be nice not having to pack up and bring out everything all the time.'' Mrs. Caines said, explaining that the pre-school will have plenty of space.

Giving a brief history of the pre-school, one of its first teachers Mrs.

Frances Goodchild -- who taught at St. Anne's from 1968-1987 -- said St.

Anne's opened on September 30, 1968 with 25 four-year-olds and was known as St. Anne's Nursery Unit.

St. Anne's was started along with St. John's in Pembroke and St. Paul's in Paget as a result of Government `Head Start' programme.

When the school began, Mrs. Goodchild recalled, there was only one assistant Mrs. Pat Farrow. But she said the school received great support from the parents and the church.

She also noted that she had many different teachers and helpers through the years who helped to make the pre-school successful.

Following the brief history lesson, St. Anne's 1995 graduates were presented with their certificates.

This was followed by parents and children singing Kirk Franklin and Family's gospel hit "The Reason Why We Sing'', and a lunch provided by the parents.
