An awe-inspiring performance set for St. Theresa's Cathedral
I am certain that many a concert will be sung during this holiday season, but if you want to hear a truly awe-inspiring performance, be at St. Theresa's Cathedral tonight at 7.30 p.m..
The Diocesan choir has gathered from the parishes to perform the peaceful and awesome 'A World of Christmas'. This cantata takes the nativity story and relates it to different cultures through the narrative.
The cultural style of the music varies according to the narrative that introduces it. You hear of references from Mexico and Sweden to Wales and (of course) Bermuda.
Approximately 90 members form the group, and the evening will showcase the talents of the Junior Choir from Mount St. Agnes as well. The choirs are made up of people of differing backgrounds, but you can sense the amity and sense of family that the individuals possess.
Rehearsals have been held every week since September, and the results are perfection. The choir boasts a full range of voices from soprano to baritone, and the masterful Bruce Fox will be on piano and organ.
His son Alex Fox, aged 12, will be featured on violin along with equally talented 17-year-old Eric Cabral in a duet on "Ave Maria" that will touch your soul with reverence.
Having attended a rehearsal on Sunday evening, I lack adequate words to express what warm feelings were re-kindled by listening to the songs. It was not simply the acoustics of the building that were impressive, but there was honest praise and worship occurring through the medium of music.
I found myself wishing that I didn't have a "shower-only" voice in order to be a part of it! Even children who came in to the practice were stilled and listened with curiosity and appreciation. While festive, it carries a holy element of the season that is too often forgotten.
Choir director Julie Madeiros masterfully leads the group through this programme and you can feel the passion for this work shared throughout the choir. Joanne Judd, who is producing the event, has shared her time and talents to ensure a heartfelt evening.
As Eric put it, they simply want to "bring Christmas cheer to Bermuda and start off the holiday season in the right spirit".
A pre-concert reception will be held for patrons only from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. at St. Theresa's Hall, on Laffan Street, by ticket only. Tickets are being sold at Music Box, St. Theresa's Gift Shop and Rectory, as well as through the choir members.
The cost is $40 for adults, $10 for people aged14 and under, and $100 for patrons. They will be sold at the door, but if you would like tickets in advance, leave a message for Joanne Judd on 295 3354 or email judd@northrock.bm.
